Yakima River Canyon and Umtanum Creek

A winding scenic byway between Ellensburg and Selah with river access sites, bighorn sheep and a suspension footbridge to the Umtanum Creek trail.

What to do

  • Drive SR 821 through the canyon and stop at the BLM recreation sites.
  • Cross the suspension bridge at Umtanum and hike up Umtanum Creek Canyon (about 6.5 miles round trip), the best bet for bighorn sheep.
  • Float or fish the Yakima River.

Getting there

Know before you go

  • BLM sites charge $5 for day use and $15 to camp; pay at the self-serve station.
  • The recreation sites are open year-round.
  • Leashed dogs are allowed on the Umtanum Creek trail.
