Shooting ranges and public land rules
Where you can legally shoot around the Tri-Cities: the public range at Rattlesnake Mountain, an indoor range in Kennewick, and the rules for public land. When in doubt, use a range.

Lake Lenore Shooting Range (WDFW)
A free WDFW rifle range with 100-, 200- and 300-yard lanes on the southeast side of Lake Lenore, off SR 17 north of Soap Lake.
Rattlesnake Mountain Shooting Facility
The Tri-Cities’ main outdoor shooting range, on 1,100 fenced acres north of Benton City, run by the Tri-Cities Shooting Association with a public range and supervised ranges for rifle, pistol, shotgun and long range.
Shooting on public land: what is allowed
These are summaries with links to the official rules. Rules change with fire season, so read the official page before you go.
| Land | Target shooting |
|---|---|
| Hanford Reach National Monument | Not allowed. No target practice or sighting in. Hunting only with shotgun, muzzleloader or archery. |
| WDFW Sunnyside-Snake River Wildlife Area (most WDFW land in our counties) | Only at the fenced Rattlesnake Mountain range on the Rattlesnake Slope Unit. |
| Other WDFW lands in Eastern Washington | Allowed where posted rules permit, into an earthen backstop at least 8 feet high, 500 feet from recreation sites and structures. Summer fire rules: through Aug. 15 only at the Methow and Lake Lenore ranges from sunrise to 10 a.m.; Aug. 16 to Sept. 15 no target shooting on WDFW land in Eastern Washington unless posted. |
| Washington DNR state trust land | Allowed under WAC 332-52-145: half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, into an earthen backstop, 500 feet from structures and recreation sites, never across or along roads or trails, no tracers or exploding targets, pack out all shells. DNR has no designated ranges; email targetshooting@dnr.wa.gov to ask about a parcel. |
| BLM land | Allowed where federal, state and local law permit, but BLM has no designated shooting sites in Oregon or Washington. Ask the Border Field Office (509-536-1200) before shooting at Juniper Dunes. |
| Benton County | County code bans shooting in listed restricted areas of unincorporated land. See Chapter 2.12. |
| Franklin County | No-shooting zones are set by the Sheriff’s Office. Do not assume private or rural land is open; ask first. |
| Inside city limits | Treat it as not allowed. Use a range. |
Never shoot on private land without the owner’s permission, and never use trash, appliances or vehicles as targets.
